Mohamed Samah: Art is the voice of the people and the soft power of nations
On our journey toward excellence, we pause at inspiring milestones where stars shine brightlyโthose who crafted a path from creativity and turned challenges into steps toward success. We are delighted to welcome the renowned director and talented actor Mohamed Samah to our magazine, a man with a long-standing artistic legacy and genuine contribution to the world of art.
1. To begin with, who is Mohamed Samah?
Iโm Mohamed Samah. I began my artistic journey 35 years ago in the field of theater, including 10 years as a theater director. I stepped away from theater two years ago and am now fully focused on promoting myself solely as an actor.
2. Tell us about your childhood and upbringing before entering the world of art.
I had no artistic interests until the age of 18. I was more into tennis, studying, and reading. But everything changed when I encountered the world of amateur theater, where I found genuine creativity, away from revenue-based calculations. I started as an assistant director, and after five years moved to professional theater, gradually advancing to become a director, while also acting in several TV dramas and films.
3. What are the most notable works youโve participated in?
My professional career can be divided into two phases:
In the 90s, I acted in series like Al A'ila
(The Family), Arabesque, Ahlam Al-Ankaboot
(Spider Dreams), Al-Suqout fi Beer Sabe'
(The Fall in Be'er Sheva), Ayyam Al-Munira
(Days of Al-Munira), Zizinia, and Abou El-Alaa 90. I also took part in Samir Ghanemโs Ramadan TV riddles for two years.
In cinema, I participated in The Deadly Call, Cheap Meat, and Hassan and Azizaโstarring Yousra and Ashraf Abdel Bakyโwhich I consider my most important work.
In theater, I worked as an assistant director with great names like Galal El Sharkawy, El Sayed Radi, and Magdy Mojahed.
In my current phase: I acted in Al-Menbar
(The Platform) movie, and the TV series Despite the Law, produced by Mr. Raymond Makary, who had a significant role in my artistic life.
Also, I appeared in White Page, invited by actress Hanan Motawa.
I featured in a Ramadan advertisement alongside singer Mohamed Hamaki.
On stage, I performed in the play Stop at Al-Ahram Theater and the Journalistsโ Syndicate.
I also directed a short film lasting two minutes that gained buzz and was selected for multiple international festivals.
4. What were the most impactful moments in your life?
Between my two professional phases, I returned to amateur theater and founded โKarakib Theater Groupโ in Hurghada. I was recognized as the first official director for the Ministry of Culture in the Red Sea Governorate. My plays received many awards and honors.
The two most impactful milestones were:
Hassan and Aziza, even though it didnโt spread widely, it introduced me to audiences.
The current phase, especially my work with producer Raymond Makary, to whom I owe a great deal.
5. What are your aspirations for the future?
I hope to continue acting until my last breathโclimbing the ladder step by step, with fairness. I seek real opportunities that showcase my talent and aim to live with health and dignity without being a burden on anyone.
6. What is your artistic message?
Art is the voice of the people, the measure of a civilization, and the most beautiful expression of existence. Itโs the soft power that influences minds and heartsโand that is what I believe in and strive to present.
7. Whatโs your message to the youth?
Stay away from despair, laziness, and dependency. Work in any field until you reach what you love. Enjoy life, be optimistic, do good, and take responsibility to be capable of leading a family in the future. Life is like a supermarketโtake whatever you want, but youโll be accountable at checkout.
8. Is there a quote that guides your journey?
โPlant the seeds of goodness; one day, that seed will grow into a tree.โ
