نبذه عن الكتاب: For many years, it has been known that mice and rats maintained on a long-term reduced food intake have an increased life span and remain healthy and vigorous at their advanced ages. What is the reason for this change in the usual pattern of aging? The evidence is overwhelming that the life extension results from a slowing of the aging processes, and the factor responsible is the decrease in caloric intake. The obvious question: How does this factor work? A good question—and the reason research on the anti-aging action of caloric restriction is today one of the most studied research areas in biological gerontology. In 1988, Rick Weindruch and Roy Walford co-authored The Retardation of Aging and Disease by Dietary Restriction, which provided an excellent encyclopedic coverage of research findings, and played an important role in attracting talented investigators into the field. Indeed, in the ensuing years, research activity increased to such an extent that encyclopedic coverage would not only be a monumental undertaking but also one that would prove far too tedious to read. Yet, as new investigators enter the field and gerontologists and geriatricians seek to keep abreast of developments, what is needed is an update of the field that also provides its historical underpinnings. The present book aims to meet these needs.
